Who Is Omar Abdullah? The Next Chief Minister Of Jammu & Kashmir
Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday announced in Srinagar that Omar Abdullah will assume the role of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. This declaration came as the National Conference party, in alliance with Congress, emerged victorious in the Union territory's assembly elections. The seasoned politician shared this news while celebrating with supporters, highlighting the alliance's success in Jammu and Kashmir's first assembly elections in a decade.
"After 10 years, the people have given their mandate to us. We pray to Allah that we meet their expectations. It will not be 'police raj' here but public here. We will try to release the innocent from jails. Media will be free. We have to develop trust between Hindus and Muslims," Abdullah told reporters.

The Congress-National Conference coalition is leading in 52 out of 90 seats, surpassing the halfway mark comfortably. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ahead in 27 seats. Trends suggest Mehbooba Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might secure only two seats.
Who Is Omar Abdullah?
Omar Abdullah hails from a prominent Kashmiri Muslim family with deep political roots. His grandfather, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, founded the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) party and served as both prime minister and chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir at different times. Farooq Abdullah, Omar's father, held the chief minister position three times between 1982 and 2002.
Born to a British mother, Omar pursued his education with a business-related bachelor's degree from a college linked to the University of Bombay (now Mumbai). He also undertook graduate studies in business administration at a Scottish university.
Omar's Political Journey
In 1998, at just 28 years old, Omar was elected to India's Lok Sabha as a JKNC member. He retained his seat a year later and joined the Commerce and Industry Ministry under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. In 2001, he became India's youngest minister for external affairs but resigned after 17 months to focus on state assembly election preparations.
Omar took over as JKNC president from his father in June 2002 but faced setbacks when JKNC lost more than half its seats in that year's elections. He lost his own seat to a PDP candidate as well. However, he returned to Lok Sabha in 2004.
In 2008, Omar won his constituency again, leading JKNC with Congress support to form a new government by 2009. At age 38, he became Jammu and Kashmir's youngest chief minister but soon resigned from JKNC presidency, succeeded by his father.
His tenure saw controversies like allegations of human rights abuses by security forces combating separatist militancy. Omar consistently criticized these actions and advocated for repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which enabled such violations.
Despite challenges during his leadership period, Omar remained committed to addressing issues within Jammu and Kashmir while striving for peace between different communities within the region.
