Who is KC Tyagi? Veteran Leader Makes Political Shift to RLD

Veteran politician KC Tyagi has begun a new political chapter by joining the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) in the presence of party president Jayant Chaudhary in New Delhi. His move comes just days after he exited the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), ending a long association that spanned over two decades.

Who is KC Tyagi?

Kishan Chand Tyagi, widely known as KC Tyagi, is a seasoned political figure with roots in Uttar Pradesh politics. Hailing from Ghaziabad, his political career stretches back to the 1970s, making him one of the more experienced voices in North Indian politics.

Tyagi first rose to national prominence in 1989 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Hapur. Over the years, he built a reputation as a strong organisational leader and articulate spokesperson.

Before his long stint with the JDU, Tyagi also held key responsibilities in the Samajwadi Party, where he served as National General Secretary. His political journey reflects a deep engagement with socialist and regional politics.

Within the JDU, Tyagi was among the party's most recognisable faces. Since joining at its formation in 2003, he served in multiple top roles, including national general secretary, chief spokesperson, and political adviser. He was also elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2013.

In 2024, he stepped down as the party's chief spokesperson, citing personal reasons-an early signal of his gradual disengagement from the party.

A sudden shift

Tyagi's resignation from the JDU on March 17 sparked speculation about his next move. His decision to join the RLD now confirms a clear political realignment, though he has not publicly detailed the reasons behind his exit.

With decades of experience and a strong organisational background, Tyagi's entry is expected to bolster the RLD's political strategy, especially in Uttar Pradesh.
