Akash Missile: India's Shield in the Sky

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited, the Akash missile system has become a vital part of India's layered air defense network. The system, which can engage multiple threats at once, recently demonstrated its capabilities by tracking 616 targets-64 of them simultaneously-and achieving a 99% neutralization rate during recent operational use on the western front.

A newer variant, Akash-NG (Next Generation), further improves on targeting speed and engagement capacity, capable of locking onto 64 targets and firing up to 12 missiles simultaneously with a strike range of up to 80 km.

Social media users, including prominent commentator Anand Ranganathan, praised Dr Ramarao's work in light of recent global conflicts. In a post on X, he wrote: "Thoughts tonight with Israel, and also Dr Ramarao, the man who on a shoestring budget built our indigenous ADS Akash."

The Man Behind the Missile: Dr Prahlada Ramarao

Dr Ramarao, a distinguished aerospace engineer from Karnataka, was handpicked by none other than Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to serve as the youngest project director of the Akash program. His work with DRDO spans across over ten major missile systems, including Akash, BrahMos, and Astra.

He served as Director of DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratory)-the DRDO's largest lab-and later became Vice Chancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT). Dr Ramarao has received several national honors, including the Padma Shri, in recognition of his contributions to India's defense sector.

Speaking in a recent interview, Dr Ramarao reflected on the early struggles of the Akash project. "Despite the challenges, the entire team's dedication and the relentless support of Dr Kalam kept the project on track," he said.

Cost-Effective, Combat-Ready

Indian defense experts have often cited the Akash missile as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive foreign systems. Its operational success has also attracted interest from several countries, with exports already underway.

In a world increasingly relying on high-tech missile shields, India's Akash system-backed by indigenous innovation-has positioned itself as a formidable and affordable solution.

Other Prominent Figures Named Dr Ramarao
While Dr Prahlada Ramarao is at the center of attention today, several other notable Indian figures share the name:

Dr A.V. Rama Rao: A pioneering chemist and founder of Avra Laboratories, known for breakthrough drug synthesis.

Dr A.H. Rama Rao: A prominent educationist and former President of the National Educational Society of Karnataka.

Dr Ramarao Golime: An academic in epidemiology and public health at the Central University of Tamil Nadu.

Dr V Rama Rao: A research officer in botany at the Central Ayurveda Research Centre, Bengaluru.

A Name to Remember

With geopolitical conflicts once again highlighting the importance of missile defense, Dr Prahlada Ramarao's legacy is being rightfully acknowledged not just in India, but also in international circles. As a key architect behind India's ability to defend its skies, Dr Ramarao represents the quiet strength of indigenous innovation in securing national interests.
