What Is Mpox (Monkeypox)? How Does It Spread? Find Out Here
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency due to a rise in mpox cases, also known as monkeypox, in several African nations.
The virus, initially identified in humans over 50 years ago in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is now spreading in eastern regions and neighbouring countries previously unaffected. also, Swedish officials have reported the first case of a new mpox variant, clade 1b, outside Africa.

What is Mpox & What Are Its Symptoms?
Mpox is a viral infection that can spread between people and from contaminated surfaces to individuals. It can also be transmitted from infected animals to humans. Symptoms include a rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen glands, and lesions on the skin, mouth, genitals, and eyes. While most cases resolve within weeks, severe instances can lead to complications or death. Pregnant individuals, children, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe symptoms.
The virus primarily spreads through close contact with an infected person via respiratory droplets or direct skin contact. It can also persist on surfaces and objects touched by an infected individual. Transmission from mother to fetus or newborn during pregnancy or birth is possible. Additionally, the virus may spread through bites or scratches from infected animals or by consuming undercooked meat.
How To Prevent?
To mitigate the risk of mpox transmission, it is crucial to avoid close contact with infected individuals and animals. Regular cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and objects are essential. Thorough handwashing after touching potentially contaminated surfaces is recommended. Cooking meat thoroughly can also help prevent infection. Individuals with confirmed or suspected mpox should avoid close physical contact with animals, including pets and livestock.
WHO's Efforts
The WHO is collaborating with partners to understand more about the natural reservoir of the monkeypox virus and assist countries in reducing transmission risks between humans and animals.
In conclusion, the surge in mpox cases has prompted significant concern among health officials globally. Preventative measures such as avoiding close contact with infected persons or animals and maintaining hygiene practices are vital in controlling the spread of this virus.
