West Bengal Governor Advocates for Balance between Ecology and Development amidst Disaster Recovery Efforts
In his visit to flood-affected areas in West Bengal, Governor C V Ananda Bose emphasized on the destruction of ecology in the name of development. He suggested undertaking specific studies to mitigate future disasters and find a permanent solution against such calamities.
West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose expressed his concern over the ecological destruction happening in the name of development on Thursday, October 5. During his visit to flood-affected regions of northern West Bengal, he emphasized the need for specific studies to be conducted in order to prevent disasters like the recent one that struck Sikkim. The governor's comments underscore a growing awareness among Indian officials about the effects of unchecked development on environmental stability and disaster risk.
A Call for Balanced Development

The Governor made these remarks while en route to surveying flood-affected districts such as Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar in Siliguri. He highlighted his intention not just to assess physical damage but also understand people’s sentiments and grievances regarding these calamities. "I would like to see as many places as possible so that I can have a feel of what is happening on the ground," he said. "More than that, I would like to go to the camps and listen to the people -- their views, sentiments and grievances."
Understanding Causes Behind Disasters
Bose stressed upon understanding various reasons behind these disasters through specific studies and assessments. Drawing from his experience in disaster management, he stated firmly that such accidents are not accidental but rather an outcome of ecological destruction caused by unregulated developmental activities. "In the name of development, we are destroying ecology", he commented.
Mitigating Future Calamities
The governor emphasized finding permanent solutions so that such calamities do not recur in future. His statements highlight an urgent need for policy changes aimed at sustainable development which strikes a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation.
Paving Way Towards Sustainable Development
In conclusion, Bose’s remarks serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders involved in development projects. His emphasis on the need for specific studies to understand the causes behind such disasters is a reminder that development should not come at the cost of environmental degradation. Furthermore, his call for a balance between development and ecology underscores the importance of sustainable practices which ensure progress without compromising our natural resources.
The governor's views echo a growing consensus among scholars and policymakers worldwide that sustainable, environmentally-friendly practices are not just ethically necessary, but also crucial for long-term economic stability and growth. As India continues to develop rapidly, it will be critical for officials at all levels of government to heed Governor Bose's advice and prioritize ecological preservation alongside economic advancement.
