Rescue Operation Brings 27 Trafficked Vizag Youths Back from Cambodia
On Friday, a significant development unfolded as 27 young individuals, previously trafficked to Cambodia, returned to Visakhapatnam, marking a crucial step in the battle against human trafficking. Visakhapatnam's Joint Commissioner of Police, Fakkeerappa Kaginelli, shared details of their arrival, noting that the first group of 10 landed at the city's airport at 5.30 pm, followed by another 15 later in the evening. Additionally, two individuals managed their return via Singapore, highlighting the collective effort to bring back those affected.

The rescue operation gained momentum following the Visakhapatnam city police's exposure of the trafficking network on May 18. The police apprehended three individuals for deceiving over 150 youths with job promises in Southeast Asia, only for them to end up in the clutches of Chinese syndicates in Cambodia. These young people were subjected to torture and forced into cybercrime and fraudulent activities under dire conditions.
Kaginelli pointed out that the situation took a turn when the trafficked youth resisted their captors in Cambodia, particularly at locations known for cybercrime activities like Jinbei and Compound, Sihanoukvile. This defiance led to the arrest of over 300 Indians by Cambodian authorities but also catalyzed actions from various Indian government departments, including the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), to secure their release.
The MEA's involvement was pivotal, with the establishment of a control room, helplines, and the appointment of special officers to navigate through diplomatic channels for the youths' freedom. Kaginelli revealed that nine more families have reached out to repatriate their loved ones, indicating that nearly 100 individuals are still awaiting contact and repatriation to Visakhapatnam.
This incident not only underscores the grim realities of human trafficking but also showcases the resilience of those affected and the concerted efforts by authorities to combat such crimes. The return of these young individuals is a beacon of hope and a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice and human rights.
