Vinod Tawde Confronts Cash-for-Votes Allegations Amid Election Controversy
Vinod Tawde, a senior figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Maharashtra minister, is embroiled in a new controversy. Allegations have surfaced accusing him of distributing money to voters just before the assembly elections. This situation threatens to tarnish the party's image. Tawde, known for his resilience, has faced multiple controversies throughout his career.

Despite these challenges, Tawde has maintained a significant role within the BJP. He served as the Minister for School and Education in Devendra Fadnavis's government in 2014. Early in his tenure, he faced scrutiny over his engineering degree from Dnyaneshwar Vidyapeeth, an unrecognised university. Opposition leaders accused him of submitting a fraudulent degree, sparking intense debates in the state Assembly.
Controversial Degree and Political Setbacks
Tawde defended his qualification, explaining that the course included both theoretical study and practical internship. He acknowledged that it lacked government approval but pursued it with full awareness of its status. "Students were informed during admission that the course didn't have recognition," he stated. Despite this controversy, Tawde remained a key figure in the BJP.
However, his reputation suffered further due to a publication contract awarded to a Marathi publishing house in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. This issue, along with his exclusion from the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, led to his sidelining within the party. Tawde expressed disappointment over not being fielded from Borivali, a seat given to Sunil Rane.
Return to National Politics
Tawde was among senior BJP leaders sidelined in 2019 but made a comeback by being appointed as BJP’s national general secretary. This role bolstered his influence within the party. In December 2023, when asked about returning to state politics, Tawde cryptically replied, "No Maharashtra, only Rashtra Nation."
The latest allegations against Tawde involve claims of distributing money to voters, with video clips circulating on social media. Bahujan Vikas Aghadi leader Hitendra Thakur alleged that a BJP leader informed him of Tawde's plans to distribute cash to voters. These accusations have raised concerns about Tawde's political future and could affect his standing within the party.
Tawde has denied these allegations of distributing money on the eve of polling. Despite these challenges, he remains focused on upcoming elections and continues to play a significant role within the BJP.
