Vijayadashami 2024: When Do Bengalis' Celebrate? Check Dussehra Date, Pooja Timings, Quotes, Wishes

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, will be celebrated by most Hindus globally on Saturday, October 12, while Bengalis will observe it a day later on Sunday, October 13.

According to the Drik Panchang, this year's Vijayadashami Muhurat falls on October 12. In West Bengal, however, the celebration traditionally takes place a day after it is observed in other parts of India.

This difference stems from how each region determines the auspicious time (Muhurata) for the festival. In most Indian states, Vijayadashami is marked based on an afternoon Muhurat when the Dashami Tithi aligns favourably with the Nakshatra, as recommended by ancient texts, including the Puranas. West Bengal, however, often prioritizes the Dashami Tithi itself over the Muhurat, which can lead to a different celebration day.

Vijayadashami commemorates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana and the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. In Nepal, Vijayadashami is observed as Dashain.
