Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway: 610 KM Corridor To Cut Travel Time By 7 Hours – A Game-Changer For Commuters!
The upcoming Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway, a 610 km stretch designed to facilitate quicker travel between Varanasi and Kolkata, is set to transform road connectivity in Eastern India. The expressway will weave through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, enhancing the travel experience for commuters by halving the current travel time from 12-14 hours to just 6-7 hours. This project, part of the ambitious Bharatmala project, represents a significant leap towards modernizing India's infrastructure.
Initiated with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, the construction of this six-lane, access-controlled highway is anticipated to cost around Rs 35,000 crore. Managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the expressway promises not only to reduce travel times but also to boost local economies, tourism, and ease traffic congestion across the states it traverses.

The expressway, expected to be fully operational by 2026, will start from Barhuli village near Chandauli in Uttar Pradesh and conclude near Uluberia in Howrah, West Bengal. Its path includes significant stretches across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, covering key districts and reducing distances between major cities. Such connectivity is poised to benefit commuters across these four states significantly.
A Closer Look at the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway Route
In Bihar, the expressway will enhance connectivity by passing through Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Gaya. It then continues to Jharkhand, touching Chatra, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, and Peterbar districts, and includes a notable passage near Ranchi through Bokaro. West Bengal’s sections of the expressway will go through Purulia, Bankura, and Arambagh, finalizing the comprehensive route designed to significantly cut down travel times.
A notable feature of the expressway’s design is a proposed 5 km tunnel in the Kaimur district of Bihar, which underscores the ambitious engineering efforts involved in this project.
Progress and Prospects
As for the current progress, land acquisition efforts are ongoing, and the Detailed Project Reports (DPR) have received approval. The government has initiated the bidding process for the construction phase, signaling a move towards the actualization of the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway.
This expressway is not just a roadway but a catalyst for economic growth, fostering enhanced connectivity and reducing congestion. Its completion will signify a major milestone in India's infrastructure development, particularly for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. With the expressway covering approximately 22 km in Uttar Pradesh, 159 km in Bihar, 187 km in Jharkhand, and 242 km in West Bengal, it is set to become a vital link in the nation's transportation network.
The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway embodies the future of travel in Eastern India. By slashing travel times, facilitating smoother traffic flow, and promising economic upliftment for the regions it connects, the expressway is poised to become a key artery in India's vast road network. Its completion will mark a significant achievement in the country's ongoing infrastructure advancement efforts.
