Two-Factor Aadhaar Authentication For NPS Logins Starting April 1: Step-by-Step Guide
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has implemented a new security measure within the National Pension System (NPS), which has come into effect from April 1.
This enhanced framework will incorporate a two-factor authentication system based on Aadhaar, mandatory for all password-based users accessing the CRA system. The PFRDA communicated this update through a circular issued on March 15, 2024.

The PFRDA notification read: "To enhance the security measures in accessing the CRA system and safeguard the interests of subscribers and stakeholders, it has been decided to bring in additional security features through Aadhaar-based authentication for login to the CRA system."
"The Aadhaar-based login authentication will be integrated with the current user ID and password-based login process so as to make the CRA system accessible through 2 Factor Authentication," the notification added.
Till March 31, nodal offices within central and state governments, along with autonomous bodies handling pension matters, were mandated to utilize password-based login procedures for NPS transactions. However, starting today, users will need to undergo Aadhaar-based authentication for login.

The PFRDA said, "User IDs of Nodal offices under the Government Sector (Central/State/CAB/SAB) shall be permitted to login to the CRA system (CRA & NPSCAN) using 2-Factor Authentication through Aadhaar OTP (One-time password). The Oversight Office (PrAO/DTA) must initially link their Aadhaar with their respective CRA User ID, enabling underlying users to initiate Aadhaar Mapping. Similarly, PAO/DTO must link their Aadhaar with their respective CRA User ID, allowing underlying DDOs to initiate Aadhaar linking."
Step By Step Guide To Use Aadhaar Authentication
- Login to the NPS website - https://enps.nsdl.com/eNPS/NationalPensionSystem.html
- Click on 'Login with PRAIN/IPIN'
- Select the PRAIN/IPIN tab, which will open a new window
- Input your user ID and password
- Complete the Captcha verification
- The window will request Aadhaar authentication and send an OTP to your registered mobile number
- Enter the OTP
- You will then gain access to your NPS account.
Users should note that under the new two-factor Aadhaar authentication system, the NPS CRA will refuse access to an account if the user enters an incorrect password five times in a row, resulting in the account being locked. Nonetheless, users reset the password by answering the secret question even after the account has been locked.
