Triple talaq is 'un-Islamic', 'inhuman', pregnant Muslim woman in letter to PM Modi

Shagufta Shah, a resident of Saharanpur has written to Prime Minister Modi demanding that triple talaq be banned. Calling the practice 'un-Islamic' and 'inhuman', Shah has alleged that she became a victim of triple talaq for refusing to abort her third child. In her letter, a copy of which was sent to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Shah has claimed that she voted for the BJP in the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh polls and demanded that the Prime Minister keep up his promise of banning the practice.

Shagufta, a mother of two girls alleged that she was abandoned by her husband Shamshad Shah when she refused to give in to her in-laws' demand of aborting her third child. "My husband and my in-laws wanted me to abort this child. I have got two daughters and they feared that it would be a girl again," she said in her letter.

She added that her refusal to abort the child was perceived as defiance. She was subjected to physical abuse by her husband but she refused to abort her child. Her husband later pronounced Talaq thrice, leaving the woman to fend for herself. "I was subjected to violence and one fine day, my husband verbally divorced me uttering 'talaq' thrice. I was thrown out of the house," she wrote.
