Detained TMC Leaders Released, Label Incident as 'Black Day for Indian Democracy'
The release of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other party leaders, hours after their detention during a sit-in at the Union Rural Development Ministry office, has sparked controversy. The event is seen as an example of 'New India', where public representatives are manhandled by police and journalists questioning the government are booked under anti-terror law UAPA.
The democratic fabric of India witnessed a tense episode on October 3, as Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and other party leaders were detained by the police during a sit-in at the Union Rural Development Ministry office in New Delhi. The leaders were released later that night, with Banerjee declaring it as a 'black day for Indian democracy.'
Allegations of Manhandling and Misuse of Anti-Terror Law

Banerjee expressed his distress over what he described as an unprecedented incident where public representatives were allegedly dragged and manhandled by Delhi Police. He also criticised the booking of journalists questioning the government under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), an anti-terror law. According to him, this incident will stand as an example of 'New India'.
Tug-of-War Between Centre and West Bengal Government
This development occurred amidst escalating tensions between the central government and West Bengal's state government over fund release issues. The TMC has been holding protests in the national capital for two consecutive days to express their discontentment regarding this matter.
Series of Protests
Banerjee, accompanied by party lawmakers, state ministers, supporters including MGNREGA workers staged a protest at Jantar Mantar following their previous two-hour sit-in at Rajghat on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary from where they were evicted by police force. Subsequently, they marched towards Krishi Bhawan housing Rural Development Ministry where they had scheduled meeting with Minister of State Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.
However, around ninety minutes after reaching Krishi Bhawan, TMC leaders claimed that Minister Jyoti refused to meet them without specifying any reasons which further aggravated their grievances.
Conclusion
The incident has sparked a row, with TMC leaders alleging an assault on democratic values and misuse of anti-terror laws. The standoff between the central and West Bengal government over fund release is likely to intensify further in the coming days. As political tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen how these issues will be resolved while maintaining the sanctity of India's democracy.
