Escalating Tensions as TMC Leaders Including Abhishek Banerjee Detained in New Delhi
In an escalating conflict between the Centre and the West Bengal government over fund release, several Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders were detained during a protest at the Union Rural Development Ministry office. Post-release, General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleged that they were manhandled by police.
The political landscape of India was charged with tension on October 3rd, as Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and several other party leaders were detained in New Delhi. The TMC leaders had staged a dharna at the Union Rural Development Ministry office, demanding a meeting with the minister. After being held for around three hours, they were released.
Allegations of Police Misconduct

In an interaction with the media following his release, Abhishek Banerjee made serious allegations against Delhi Police. He claimed that TMC leaders, including women members, were manhandled by police officials during their detention. They were pulled by their hair and dragged out in an apparent disregard for basic human rights and democratic norms, he alleged. "Today is a black day for Indian democracy," said Banerjee.
A Political Firestorm
The incident sparked a political firestorm across the country. In response to Tuesday's events, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on social media platform X expressing her dismay over BJP's perceived disdain towards the people of West Bengal. These developments have added fuel to the ongoing tug-of-war between Centre and West Bengal government over fund releases to the state.
Demonstrations in National Capital
This incident marked another day of protests led by TMC in New Delhi - their second consecutive demonstration in the national capital this week. Abhishek Banerjee along with party lawmakers, state ministers and supporters including MGNREGA workers protested at Jantar Mantar after staging a two-hour sit-in at Rajghat on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary before being evicted by police forces.
March Towards Rural Development Ministry
Following their protest at Jantar Mantar, the TMC leaders and supporters took out a march to the Rural Development Ministry at Krishi Bhawan. Their demand for a meeting with the Union Minister was met with detention, marking an escalation in their ongoing struggle against what they perceive as central government's apathy towards West Bengal.
In conclusion, this recent incident of detention of TMC leaders has intensified the political tension between Centre and West Bengal State Government. The allegations of police misconduct have raised questions on democratic norms and human rights in India’s capital city. As these developments unfold, it remains to be seen how this political tug-of-war will pan out and what its implications would be on Centre-State relations in India.
