Teacher's Day in India: Celebrating Educators and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's Legacy

Every year on 5th September, India celebrates Teacher's Day to honour Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary. This day is dedicated to educators who have shaped students' futures and contributed to the nation's progress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt wishes, stating, "{Teachers not only nourish the mind but also lay the foundation of a strong and bright India. Their commitment and compassion are invaluable}." He also expressed gratitude towards teachers, acknowledging Dr. Radhakrishnan's contributions.

PM Narendra Modi's early education took place in Vadnagar, where he was taught by several influential teachers. His first teacher, Hiraben Mulchand, taught him from classes 1 to 4. She fondly remembers young Narendra as disciplined and cultured, often engaging in evening prayers before greeting his parents. Hiraben proudly stated, "{The Narendra I taught is the Prime Minister of the country today, what greater pride could there be for me?}"

When Narendra Modi attended B.N. High School in Vadnagar, Prahladbhai Patel became his teacher from classes 9 to 11. Prahladbhai recalls Narendra's keen interest in Sanskrit and Gujarati languages and his competitive spirit in various activities. He shared a memorable incident where Narendra insisted on playing Jogidas Khuman in a play, impressing everyone with his performance.

Another significant figure in PM Modi's life was Rasbihari Maniyar, the former principal of B.N. Vidyalaya. Maniyar maintained correspondence with Modi through letters, offering advice and suggestions. He once advised Modi to carry two pens instead of one for practicality. Despite his weak handwriting, Maniyar admired Narendra's dedication and hard work.

In June 2022, during a hospital inauguration in Navsari, PM Modi had an emotional reunion with his primary school teacher Jagdish Naik. The meeting was captured in viral photos showing Modi greeting Naik with folded hands while receiving blessings from him. Naik expressed his happiness by saying, "{What greater happiness could there be for me than that my taught student is the Prime Minister of the country today...}"

Narendra Modi's childhood was marked by both mischief and discipline. He once brought home a baby crocodile from a pond, only to return it at his mother's insistence. Yet, he was also dedicated to academics and extracurricular activities, always eager to excel.

The Lasting Impact of Teachers

PM Modi has consistently shown respect for his teachers throughout his life. In 2005, as Gujarat's Chief Minister, he honoured 28 of his teachers by inviting them to Gandhinagar. Whenever he visited Gujarat, he made it a point to meet them, demonstrating humility and gratitude that continues to inspire many.

Unfortunately, Rasbihari Maniyar passed away on November 27, 2022. PM Modi paid tribute by tweeting in Gujarati: "{He had an invaluable contribution in my life...}" This reflects the profound impact teachers have had on him.
