A New Era of Public Celebrations

Aqib Ahmad, a 22-year-old city resident, expressed his delight at the unprecedented public nature of the New Year festivities. "This is the first time we are having a New Year party in a public place. Earlier, such parties were limited to the elite class and organized behind closed doors of hotels," he said, swaying to the music emanating from the stage set up at Lal Chowk.

Reflecting on the remarkable change, Ahmad noted, "Until a few years ago, it was unthinkable to have a New Year party in a public place, but things have changed now. Everyone wants to have some entertainment in life. Look around, and you will find people from all walks of life, from those with conservative outlooks to modern-looking individuals. They are all having a great time."

Kashmiris Unite for New Year Festivities

The New Year celebrations in Srinagar drew not only city residents but also Kashmiris from various parts of the Valley. Lateef Khatana, a resident of a remote village in the Kokernag area of Anatnag district, expressed his pleasant surprise at the scale of the event. "I was pleasantly surprised at the scale of the event organized in the city. Similar functions should be held in all district headquarters from next year," he said.

Khatana and his friends had traveled over 100 kilometers to experience Kashmir's first-ever public New Year program.

Visitors Thrilled Despite Lack of Snow

Among the attendees were Satish Kumar and his family, who had come from Delhi with the hope of celebrating the New Year in Kashmir. Despite their initial disappointment at the absence of significant snowfall, they were captivated by the electric atmosphere of the festivities. "It is our first visit to Kashmir, and to be honest, we were disappointed at not finding much snow. However, this electric atmosphere has more than made up for that disappointment. We are feeling at home, though it is a little colder than Delhi here," Kumar remarked.

Robust Security Measures Ensure Safety

While the celebrations were in full swing, the authorities ensured the safety of all attendees by implementing robust security arrangements. A senior police official stated, "Law enforcing agencies are maintaining a tight vigil around Lal Chowk. We want to ensure that locals and tourists have a good time here and everyone takes back good memories from here."

The successful and joyous New Year celebrations in Srinagar marked a significant milestone in the region's transformation, fostering a sense of unity, entertainment, and optimism among the people of Kashmir.
