Veteran Freedom Fighter Aziz Pahad Dies, South Africa Mourns Loss
Aziz Goolam Hoosein Pahad, a veteran freedom fighter and former deputy minister in South Africa passed away on September 27, 2023. His death comes three months after his elder brother Essop's demise. The brothers were key figures in the anti-apartheid movement.
South African politician and freedom struggle veteran, Aziz Pahad, has passed away in Johannesburg at the age of 82. His death comes nearly three months after his elder brother and fellow activist, Essop Pahad, also died. The Pahad brothers were both prominent figures in the fight against apartheid from a young age as members of the Transvaal Indian Congress.
A Life Dedicated to Freedom

The family made an announcement on Wednesday evening expressing their grief over the demise of Aziz Goolam Hoosein Pahad. They described him as a patriot, freedom fighter and servant of the people throughout his life. Not only was he a dedicated member of the African National Congress (ANC), but he was also recognised as a brilliant diplomat and strategist who served as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for International Relations from 1994 to 2008.
An Exile Turned Leader
In their younger years, both Aziz and Essop went into exile due to their anti-apartheid activities. However, they played leading roles within ANC while abroad by leading international calls for Nelson Mandela's release during his imprisonment under apartheid rule.
Return to South Africa
Their return to South Africa marked an important moment in history when F W de Klerk’s white minority apartheid government decided to free Mandela after keeping him imprisoned for 27 years on political grounds. The role that both brothers played upon returning home is significant; they were instrumental in shaping post-apartheid South Africa with their continued service in politics.
A Legacy Remembered
The passing away of Aziz Pahad marks not just an end to one man's life but brings with it reflections on an era where individuals like him fought relentlessly against racial segregation under apartheid. His dedication to the cause of freedom, alongside his brother Essop, has left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
In conclusion, Aziz Pahad's life and work hold great significance in South African history. His contributions as a freedom fighter against apartheid and later as a political leader have played an instrumental role in shaping the country's democratic landscape. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the life of a man who devoted himself to service and fought for justice and equality.
