Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam Embarks on Five-Day Visit to Strengthen India Relations

Singapore's President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, arrived in India on Tuesday night for a five-day visit. This trip aims to enhance bilateral ties across various sectors. Union Minister Jitin Prasada welcomed him at the airport. This marks Shanmugaratnam's first visit to India as Singapore's president.

On Thursday, a ceremonial reception will be held for Tharman at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Later, he will engage in discussions with President Droupadi Murmu. Following this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet him. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Tharman's visit is anticipated to further strengthen the bilateral relationship.

Celebrating Diplomatic Relations

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, shared on X that this significant milestone will be celebrated during Tharman's state visit to New Delhi.

The MEA highlighted that the bilateral relations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Singapore from September 4-5, 2024. This ongoing collaboration aims to deepen ties between the two nations.

Visit to Odisha

In addition to his engagements in New Delhi, Tharman will travel to Odisha from January 17 to 18. This part of his itinerary underscores the importance of regional connections within India during his state visit.

The state visit not only marks a significant diplomatic milestone but also sets the stage for future cooperation between India and Singapore. Both countries are keen on exploring new avenues for partnership and mutual growth.
