Satish Kumar Appointed as First Dalit Chairman of Railway Board
Satish Kumar, an officer from the Indian Railway Management Service, has been appointed as the chairman and CEO of the Railway Board. This historic appointment makes him the first Scheduled Castes individual to hold this position. His tenure will begin on September 1, following the superannuation of Jaya Varma Sinha on August 31.

Appointment Details
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Kumar's appointment. He will serve in the apex pay scale, pay level 17, as per the 7th Central Pay Commission. Kumar is a distinguished officer from the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), with over 34 years of service in Indian Railways.
Kumar's educational qualifications are notable. He holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur. Additionally, he has a Post Graduate Diploma in Operation Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University.
Career Milestones
Kumar began his career in March 1988 and has held various key roles across different zones and divisions. His initial postings included the Jhansi Division of the erstwhile Central Railway and Diesel Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi. Here, he developed his skills in locomotive engineering and maintenance.
He later served in North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur, and Patiala Locomotive Works, contributing to projects that improved operational efficiency. From April 2017 to April 2019, he was the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Lucknow Division on Northern Railway.
Innovations and Contributions
A significant achievement by Kumar is his work on the Fog Safe Device. This innovation ensures safe train operations during foggy conditions, particularly in northern India during winter months. The device has become crucial for Indian Railways, reducing risks associated with low visibility.
Kumar's efforts in enhancing this technology have earned him recognition and appreciation from various quarters. His contributions have been instrumental in improving safety and efficiency within Indian Railways.
Leadership Roles
Before becoming General Manager of North Central Railway, Kumar served as Senior Deputy General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer of North Western Railway, Jaipur. On November 8, 2022, he took charge as General Manager of North Central Railway, Prayagraj.
In recognition of his vast experience and contributions, Kumar was recently appointed as Member Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS). This key position oversees critical aspects of traction and rolling stock across Indian Railways.
Kumar's ascent to Chairman of the Railway Board marks a significant milestone in his career. He now plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of India's railway network.
