Rahul Gandhi's 'Tempo' Dig At PM Modi In Cash-For-Vote Row; BJP Denies Allegations
A fresh controversy has erupted in Maharashtra over an alleged cash-for-vote scandal, involving BJP leader Vinod Tawde and claims of ₹5 crore being distributed to influence voters.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, reacting sharply to the accusations, took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the BJP has called the allegations baseless, demanding an impartial investigation.

The Alleged Scandal
The controversy revolves around allegations made by members of the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA), led by Hitendra Thakur. They claim that Vinod Tawde, a prominent BJP leader, arrived at a hotel in Virar, Maharashtra, with ₹5 crore in cash, intended for distribution to voters. According to Thakur, some BJP leaders reportedly informed him about the plan, leading him to call for immediate action from the Election Commission.
Thakur stated that he initially doubted the claims but later saw Tawde at the hotel. He urged the Election Commission to take strict action against Tawde and the BJP, emphasizing that the distribution of money to influence votes is a serious offense. Thakur's statement sparked a wave of political allegations, with Congress and other opposition parties seizing on the incident.
Rahul Gandhi's Reaction: A Jibe at PM Modi
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, quickly weighed in on the issue, using the opportunity to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a tweet (posted on X, formerly Twitter), Gandhi questioned the origins of the ₹5 crore and mocked Modi's earlier statements on corruption. He wrote, "Modiji, from whose SAFE did these 5 crores come? Who looted the public's money and sent you in the tempo?"
This comment was a direct jab at PM Modi's previous remarks about Congress being complicit in crony capitalism and receiving large sums of money. In a political climate rife with accusations of corruption, Gandhi's remark seemed designed to remind voters of the charges levied against the ruling BJP in the past.
Vinod Tawde's Denial and Explanation
BJP leader Vinod Tawde, who was accused of being involved in the cash-for-vote scheme, quickly denied the allegations, calling them unfounded. Tawde explained that his visit to Virar was for a routine meeting with local party members to discuss polling procedures and the Model Code of Conduct. He argued that there was no truth to the claim that he was carrying ₹5 crore for vote-buying, and he suggested that the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi leaders had misunderstood the situation.
"I went there to tell them about it. The party workers (from BVA), Appa Thakur and Kshitij, thought we were distributing money. Let the Election Commission and the police inquire, let them get CCTV footage," Tawde said. He further added that he had been part of the BJP for over 40 years, and it was not in his character to engage in such activities. He requested the Election Commission to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to clear his name.
BJP's Defense: Allegations Are Baseless
BJP's national spokesperson, Sudhanshu Trivedi, vehemently rejected the allegations, calling them a last-ditch attempt by the opposition parties to undermine the ruling party. Trivedi suggested that the charges were part of a broader strategy by the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to discredit BJP leaders ahead of the elections.
He pointed out that Tawde had attended the meeting in Virar at the request of a local BJP candidate to instruct party workers on election procedures. "Vinod Tawde is our national secretary and is involved in several party functions. These meetings are a normal part of the election process," Trivedi explained. He further challenged the opposition to provide evidence, stating, "₹5 crores cannot be brought in a pocket. It would be visible if someone were carrying it. They should show proof and not make baseless allegations."
Trivedi also emphasized the need to review the CCTV footage from the hotel and the surrounding area to provide clarity on what transpired.
Police Investigation and FIRs Registered
Following the allegations, the Vasai police in Maharashtra registered two FIRs (First Information Reports) related to the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pournima Chougule, confirmed that money and diaries had been recovered from the hotel where the meeting took place. She added that a third FIR would be registered for holding a press conference without proper permissions, as the event was deemed to have violated the rules of the Model Code of Conduct.
Chougule stated that the situation was under control, but further investigations would continue. The police are expected to gather more evidence, including CCTV footage from the hotel, which could provide clarity on the claims made by the BVA.
Political Implications and Upcoming Elections
As the controversy unfolds, the timing of the allegations is significant. With the 2024 general elections fast approaching, political parties in Maharashtra and across India are watching the developments closely. The Congress has seized the opportunity to target the BJP over allegations of corruption and vote-buying, while the BJP is adamant that the claims are false and politically motivated.
This incident also highlights the deepening political rivalry in Maharashtra between the ruling BJP and the opposition. Both parties are using the allegations as ammunition in their ongoing battle for voter support ahead of the upcoming elections. The Election Commission's investigation will likely play a pivotal role in determining the legitimacy of the claims and whether any action will be taken against the BJP or Tawde.
Conclusion: A Divisive Issue
The cash-for-vote scandal involving Vinod Tawde has sparked intense debate in Maharashtra's political landscape. While Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have called for action against Tawde and the BJP, the ruling party remains firm in its stance, demanding evidence to support the allegations. As investigations continue, the political heat in Maharashtra is expected to rise, with both sides gearing up for the upcoming general elections.
