Punjab School Holiday: These Schools and Colleges To Remain Closed In Jalandhar

In the wake of last week's torrential rains that submerged large parts of the Doaba region, the Jalandhar district administration has declared a two-day holiday for students of nine government schools deemed structurally unsafe.

District Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal, after a comprehensive review of the flood-affected areas, ordered the closure of these specific schools on September 11 and 12. This decision marks a significant reduction from the initial list of 41 schools that were shut down immediately following the deluge. The administration has confirmed that all other schools previously on the list have been cleared to resume operations.

Following floods in the Doaba region, the Jalandhar district administration, led by District Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal, closed nine government schools on September 11 and 12, after previously shutting down 41 schools. The BJP councillors blamed the AAP-led civic body for the crisis, citing the failure of the Pholariwal Sewage Treatment Plant and a lack of accountability.

The heavy rainfall led to severe waterlogging across Jalandhar city, with inundation reported on highways, link roads, and in nearly every urban area. The flood control room received over 200 complaints of water entering homes and commercial basements, causing significant disruption and damage. Key facilities, including the district court complex, were also affected, bringing official work to a standstill.

"The situation is being managed on a war footing. Our teams have responded promptly to each complaint, and drainage facilities have been utilised to their maximum capacity," stated DC Aggarwal. He informed that accumulated rainwater was successfully discharged into the Kala Sanghian drain, which flows into the Satluj river.

Political Storm Rages Amid Stagnant Waters

On the other hand, BJP councillors of the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation have launched a sharp attack on the AAP-led civic body, holding it directly responsible for the "preventable" crisis.

Led by Ward No. 50 councillor Manjit Singh Titu, the BJP leaders accused the corporation of gross negligence and a lack of accountability. They highlighted the catastrophic failure of the crores-worth Pholariwal Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), whose motor burnt out and, with no backup generator, ceased functioning entirely.

"This plant failure directly led to dirty water flooding city areas, causing crores of rupees in losses to traders, especially in Model Town where basements were filled," Titu stated during a press conference at the Punjab Press Club. He criticized the Mayor and the state government for turning a blind eye to the deteriorating civic conditions, which were also exposed during the recent Sodal Mela due to broken, pothole-ridden roads.

The councillors warned of an impending health crisis, pointing to the rampant accumulation of garbage and stagnant sewage water that continues to plague streets and neighbourhoods. "Despite repeated complaints, the matter is not being addressed on a priority basis. Jalandhar is steeped in a deep civic crisis, and those in power must be held accountable," Titu added.

With the sun now out, the focus in Jalandhar remains on pumping out the water from the last week and the escalating political debate over who is to blame for the extensive damage.
