Pune Pub and Bar Staff Protest Crackdown After Car Crash Incident
In a significant turn of events in Pune, a large group of employees from various bars and pubs staged a protest on Friday, voicing their concerns over losing their jobs. This comes in the aftermath of a tragic car crash involving a teenager, which prompted local authorities to crack down on nightlife establishments. The protest saw the participation of approximately 2,500 individuals, including employees and owners, who gathered at the Raja Bahadur Mills close to the Pune station area.

The district administration's stringent actions have affected several pubs and bars across Pune, with as many as 32 facing repercussions based on directives from the Pune Collector. This move was triggered by the unfortunate incident in Kalyaninagar, where a Porsche, reportedly driven by an intoxicated teenager, resulted in the death of two motorbike-borne software engineers.
Employees at the forefront of the protest highlighted their plight. "We are facing the brunt of the fault of two bars," stated one bar worker, emphasizing that not all establishments should be penalized for the violations of a few. Another participant, a woman employee from one of the affected pubs, echoed this sentiment, asserting that only those pubs flouting rules should face action.
The impact of these administrative measures is profound among the workforce of these establishments. An employee from a pub in Mundhwa area shared his distress over the situation. Having already endured financial hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic, he expressed concern over the looming threat to their livelihoods and the well-being of their families due to the recent crackdown.
The police investigation into the car crash revealed that prior to the accident, the teenager had allegedly consumed alcohol at a hotel. This has led to the arrest of two employees and the owner of two liquor-serving establishments - Cosie restaurant and Hotel Blak Club hotel in Mundhwa - further intensifying scrutiny on such venues.
This series of events underscores a growing tension between regulatory actions aimed at ensuring public safety and the economic implications for those employed within Pune's nightlife industry. The protesters' call for a more targeted approach to enforcement reflects broader concerns over job security and livelihoods amidst regulatory crackdowns.
