Pune Police Arrest One Suspect in Gang-Rape Case; Two Others Still Sought
Authorities have apprehended one of the three suspects involved in the alleged rape of a 21-year-old woman near Pune last week, officials reported on Friday. The arrested individual, aged 28, along with his two accomplices, has a criminal history, according to an official statement. The suspects were identified using CCTV footage from a hotel on the route to Bopdev Ghat, matching descriptions provided by the victim and her male companion.

The incident occurred on the night of October 3 in the Bopdev Ghat area, where the woman was with a male friend. The attackers also assaulted her friend. After reviewing CCTV footage, police used technical analysis and local intelligence to confirm one suspect's identity. "He was nabbed early Friday morning," stated Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar.
Police Efforts and Investigation
Kumar noted that all three suspects had prior theft charges. To evade capture, they avoided CCTV cameras while fleeing. They took an 80 km detour to reach Khed Shivapur plaza on Satara Road, which is only 20 km away from the crime scene. Upon learning about the registered offence on October 4, they left the city. However, the arrested suspect later returned.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis commended the police for their efforts. He mentioned that around 700 officers were deployed to track down the culprits. A reward of Rs 10 lakh was announced for information leading to their capture. "An incident shaming humanity had taken place," Fadnavis said, expressing confidence that the remaining suspects would soon be apprehended.
Preventive Measures and Future Plans
Commissioner Kumar revealed plans to address safety concerns in Bopdev Ghat. Police are identifying areas with poor mobile network coverage and urging service providers to install towers. Additionally, street lights will be set up, and a police outpost will be made operational as the location is popular among picnickers.
The government is committed to ensuring that those responsible face severe penalties, Fadnavis added. The investigation continues as authorities work to locate and arrest the remaining two suspects whose whereabouts have been traced.
