Priyanka Gandhi Thanks Amit Shah After Center Declares Wayanad Landslide As 'Disaster of Severe Nature'
Congress MP from Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi Vadra recently praised the Home Ministry's decision to classify the Wayanad landslide as a 'Disaster of Severe Nature'. She believes this recognition will significantly aid those affected and in need of rehabilitation.
On July 30, Kerala's Wayanad district experienced devastating landslides due to heavy rainfall. The Chooralmala and Mundakkai areas were severely impacted, resulting in over 200 fatalities, numerous injuries, and thousands displaced. This event is considered one of the most catastrophic in Kerala's history.

Government Response and Financial Aid
The Union Home Ministry officially declared the tragedy a Disaster of Severe Nature on Sunday. This declaration acknowledges the disaster's severity and its impact on the region. The Ministry communicated this decision to Kerala's government, explaining that initial financial assistance would come from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
The communication further mentioned that additional support would be provided by the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) after an evaluation by an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT). The message stated, "However, keeping in view the intensity and magnitude of the Meppadi landslide disaster in Wayanad district, it has been considered by the IMCT as a disaster of severe nature for all practical purposes."
Calls for Immediate Action
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her satisfaction on social media platform X about Amit Shah's decision. She stated, "I am glad Amit Shah ji has finally taken the decision to declare the Wayanad tragedy as a 'Disaster of Severe Nature'. This will greatly help those in need of rehabilitation and is definitely a step in the right direction."
She also urged the central government to promptly allocate funds for relief efforts. Priyanka added, "We will all be grateful if adequate funds for the same can also be allocated at the earliest." Her appeal highlights the urgency for financial support to assist those affected by this calamity.
