President Murmu’s R-Day Address: Constitution As The Pillar Of India’s Collective Identity
On the eve of India's 76th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a powerful address emphasizing the centrality of the Constitution in shaping the nation's identity and progress. In her speech, she celebrated the Constitution as the ultimate foundation binding India's citizens together and praised its evolution into a living document over the last 75 years.

Constitution: A Living Document of India's Moral Compass
President Murmu highlighted that the Constitution has become a dynamic guide for the nation, reflecting India's deep-rooted civic virtues that have been part of its cultural heritage for millennia. She referred to the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, a date now celebrated as Constitution Day since 2015. The President emphasized how the Constitution, rooted in India's democratic ethos, continues to serve as a testament to the country's collective values.
75 Years of Progress and Strides
While acknowledging that 75 years might seem like the blink of an eye in the life of a nation, President Murmu remarked that this period marked a significant awakening for India. The nation has regained its rightful place among the global community, rediscovering its ancient wisdom and knowledge after centuries of colonial exploitation.
Tribute to Freedom Fighters and National Icons
In her address, the President paid homage to the brave souls who fought for India's independence. She recalled the sacrifices of well-known freedom fighters and lesser-recognized heroes such as Bhagwan Birsa Munda, whose contributions are being rightfully acknowledged in this year marking his 150th birth anniversary. President Murmu also celebrated the legacy of iconic figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose leadership helped India rediscover its democratic spirit.
Acknowledging the Role of Women in Shaping India's Destiny
The President praised the role of women in the Constituent Assembly, noting that India had 15 female members, including pioneering leaders like Sarojini Naidu, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, and Sucheta Kripalani. She underscored that at a time when women's equality was a distant dream in many parts of the world, Indian women were already shaping the nation's destiny and contributing to its democratic values.
Gratitude to Dr. Ambedkar and the Constituent Assembly
President Murmu concluded her address by expressing deep gratitude to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, and other members of the Constituent Assembly. She acknowledged their tireless efforts in creating the Constitution, which has guided India's progress for over seven decades.
In this way, President Murmu's speech reaffirmed the importance of the Constitution as a living document that continues to shape the identity, progress, and unity of the nation.
