Calcutta High Court Orders Police to Act Against Violators of July 28 Rally for School Job Candidates
The Calcutta High Court announced on Friday that it would take action against anyone defying its order regarding a rally by school job candidates to the state secretariat Nabanna in Howrah on July 28. This decision came after the police denied permission for the event. The court's directive was issued during a hearing of a petition filed by a shop owner, who argued that his business was suffering due to frequent rallies and protests on Nityadhan Mukherjee Road in Howrah.

Justice Tirthankar Ghosh instructed, "Since the police authorities have refused permission to the organisation on July 28, in case there is any assembly of persons which disturbs the business of the present petitioner and/or other affected persons who intend to carry out their trade/profession or day-to-day work, police authorities would take steps against the violators in accordance with law."
Police Denial and Rally Background
Advocate General Kishore Dutta, representing the state government, confirmed that the police had denied permission for the rally, citing valid reasons. The rally was organised by individuals who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court ruling in April. This ruling led to the cancellation of appointments for nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in state-supported schools.
The organisers of the rally claimed that they had obtained their positions through legitimate channels and were not involved in any wrongdoing. Despite this, the court emphasised that any gathering disrupting local businesses would face legal consequences.
Impact on Local Businesses
The petitioner's complaint highlighted how repeated processions and protests were affecting his business operations. The court's decision aims to balance the right to protest with the rights of local businesses to operate without disruption. The ruling underscores the importance of maintaining public order while respecting individual rights.
This situation reflects ongoing tensions between those affected by job losses and authorities enforcing public order. As events unfold, both sides are urged to find a resolution that respects legal boundaries and addresses grievances effectively.
