PM Modi's Commitment to Farmers' Issues Highlighted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar recently highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on farmers' issues. Speaking in the Upper House, Dhankhar mentioned that the prime minister has prioritised farmers in various sectors, including affordable housing, solar energy, and water supply. He emphasised that expectations are high as efforts converge to elevate farmers' status.

Dhankhar expressed confidence that current initiatives will gain momentum, with all agencies working together. He noted that while expectations are significant, achievements so far have been remarkable and will benefit the nation greatly. His comments followed earlier concerns about farmers' distress and protests.
Focus on Farmers' Concerns
Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda acknowledged Dhankhar's dedication to farmers' issues. Gowda, a member of the Janata Dal Secular, appreciated Dhankhar's concern for the farming community. "You speak so much about the farmer; yesterday... on the issue of the farming communities. You are so concerned about the farming community. I am a farmer, sir," Gowda remarked.
Earlier in Mumbai, Dhankhar had expressed worry over agitating farmers and their impact on national well-being. He questioned Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chouhan about unfulfilled promises to farmers during an event celebrating the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology's centenary.
Unfulfilled Promises
Dhankhar urged Chouhan to address promises made to farmers, asking why they remain unmet. "Every moment is important for you. I urge you to please tell me, was a promise made to the farmers? Why has the promise not been fulfilled? What are we doing to fulfil the promise?" he asked. He referenced past and ongoing farmer agitations, stressing that time is passing without action.
Drawing a parallel with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's role in unifying India, Dhankhar reminded Chouhan of his responsibilities as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. He emphasised that addressing farmers' challenges is crucial and should not be underestimated.
Political Reactions
The opposition in Rajya Sabha praised Dhankhar for advocating for farmers. However, he cautioned them against insincere support, stating that "the interest of farmers would not be served by crocodile tears." The prolonged farmers' protest had previously strained relations between the government and farmers, leading to the repeal of three contentious farm laws after demonstrations at Delhi's border.
The ongoing dialogue around farmers' issues reflects their significance in national discourse. As efforts continue to address their concerns, stakeholders remain hopeful for meaningful progress.
