Heritage as Humanity's Shared Consciousness, PM Modi Speaks at UNESCO
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that heritage is more than history; it embodies a shared human consciousness. He urged people to use heritage to improve global well-being and foster deeper connections. Speaking at the 46th World Heritage Committee (WHC) session's opening ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, Modi highlighted the universal nature of heritage, stating that historical sites transcend current geopolitical issues.

India will contribute USD 1 million to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for capacity building, technical assistance, and conservation of world heritage sites. This funding aims to benefit countries in the Global South. Modi made this announcement in the presence of UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay and numerous international delegates. This is the first time India is hosting this significant UNESCO event, which runs from July 21 to July 31.
India's Commitment to Heritage
Modi praised the WHC, expressing pride in hosting the event and emphasising India's vision of "Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi." He noted that North East India's historic Moidams, a mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, has been nominated for inclusion in the World Heritage List. If accepted, it will be India's 43rd World Heritage Site and the first cultural world heritage site in North East India.
Highlighting India's ancient civilisation, Modi said every moment reflects its glorious past. He pointed out that Delhi is not just India's capital but a centre of thousands of years of heritage. He cited the ancient Iron Pillar as an example of India's metallurgical prowess, remaining rust-free over centuries. "India's heritage is not just history; it is also science," he asserted.
Significance of Historical Discoveries
Modi mentioned ancient sites like Lothal and Dholavira in Gujarat, showcasing advancements from old civilisations. He also referred to findings in Uttar Pradesh's Sinauli, where copper age discoveries are closer to the Vedic Age than the Indus Valley Civilisation. These include a 4000-year-old horse-driven chariot, stressing the need for new perspectives on India's past.
The prime minister visited an exhibition at Bharat Mandapam showcasing artefacts brought back to India. Over 350 artefacts have been repatriated so far. Modi noted that returning these artefacts reflects global liberalism and respect for history. UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay accompanied him during this visit.
Encouraging Global Cooperation
In his speech, Modi called for global cooperation to promote each other's heritage and enhance human welfare through tourism and job creation. "Heritage is not only history; it is a shared consciousness of humanity," he said. "Whenever we look at historical sites, our mind rises above current geopolitical factors."
Modi also highlighted engineering feats represented by ancient heritage sites like Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand and Brihadishvara temple built by the Cholas. He noted that there was a phase when heritage was neglected for development but stated that today's generation is more aware.
The meeting is attended by over 2,000 delegates from more than 150 countries. Modi urged foreign guests and dignitaries to explore India during their stay. He mentioned projects like Kashi Viswanath Corridor, Ram temple, and the modern campus of Nalanda University as examples of balancing development with heritage conservation.
The prime minister concluded by reiterating India's commitment to preserving its rich cultural legacy while fostering global cooperation for mutual benefit.
