Panipat Woman Arrested for Murdering 4 Children, Including Her Own Son Over 'Beauty Complex'

Authorities in Haryana have arrested Poonam, a resident of Panipat, on charges of killing four children over a period of four years. Investigators say the victims included her own son and that the attacks were driven by what they describe as a disturbing "beauty complex".

Pattern of Attacks Spanning Four Years

Police say Poonam's first attempt took place in 2021 when she targeted her two year old niece, Vidhi. The child survived after Poonam allegedly poured boiling tea on her face, an incident that the family initially believed to be accidental.

This week, the six year old was found dead, marking what investigators now believe was Poonam's final act of violence. The child had been dressed for a family function when she was allegedly drowned in a tub of water. Her grandmother discovered her body.

Suspected Murders and Motive

According to police, Poonam is suspected of killing three other children during this period. Her four year old son is among the victims. Officers believe she targeted three young girls because she saw them as "more beautiful" than herself. The motive behind her son's death remains uncertain.

Investigators also believe that Shubham, killed in 2023, was targeted in an attempt to divert suspicion after her first murder. Ishika, aged nine, is believed to have been her first confirmed victim, followed by eight year old Jia. Vidhi was reportedly the fourth child she targeted.

Confession in the Latest Case

Police say Poonam has confessed to killing Vidhi during a family wedding gathering. She allegedly took the girl into a storeroom, gained her trust, and convinced her to stand in a tub of water before holding her head down until she stopped resisting.

Authorities say details of the three earlier murders are still being pieced together as the investigation continues.

Family Demands Strict Action

Vidhi's father, Sandeep, has demanded the harshest punishment for Poonam.

"I had my doubts about her, but my family always dismissed my concerns," he said.

"Poonam had a beauty complex and, out of jealousy, she killed my daughter. She should face the death penalty. We don't know how many children might have been killed if she hadn't been caught. Now, she might even attack my son," he added.
