Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Questions Naveen Patnaik's Leadership Amid Rain Crisis
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi subtly criticised opposition leader Naveen Patnaik on Thursday. He questioned Patnaik's visits to crop fields damaged by unexpected rains. Majhi, without naming Patnaik, commented on the BJD president's tour of five districts, including Ganjam and Puri. He suggested that leaders who once stayed distant are now compelled to visit rural areas due to the BJP's influence.

Majhi remarked at a public event that leaders previously detached from the public are now visiting villages. He attributed this change to the BJP's approach. "The leaders who were once living in ivory towers are now forced to visit muddy and dusty villages because of the BJP’s style of functioning," he stated. Majhi emphasised that those who governed for long were disconnected from the populace.
BJP's Influence and BJD's Response
Majhi and his cabinet members visited rain-affected areas on December 29. In contrast, Patnaik toured five districts on December 30 and 31. Majhi urged those previously isolated in "ivory towers" not to be disturbed by the BJP's working style. He highlighted that the BJP has achieved what the BJD couldn't in 24 years.
In response, senior BJD leader Ganeswar Behera countered Majhi's remarks. Behera, also an MLA from Kendrapara, claimed that the BJP is uneasy about Patnaik's rising popularity. "People in large numbers gather to see and talk to Patnaik when he visits villages," Behera noted, adding that Naveen Babu is seen as a needed leader.
Political Dynamics in Odisha
State law minister Pritihiviraj Harichandan criticised the opposition for their political theatrics. He urged them to support government efforts for Odisha's development instead of engaging in drama. Harichandan stated, "What the BJD could not do in the last 24 years, the BJP has done." He called for cooperation with ongoing governmental work.
The political landscape in Odisha reflects a growing tension between the ruling BJD and opposition BJP. As both parties engage in public exchanges, their strategies highlight differing approaches to governance and public engagement. The focus remains on addressing issues faced by farmers affected by unseasonal rains.
