Odisha Bandh on July 17: What’s Open, What’s Closed Amid Protest Over Balasore Student’s Death

In a powerful political and social statement, eight opposition parties led by the Congress have called for a statewide Odisha bandh on July 17, demanding justice for the college student from Balasore who died after setting herself on fire. The student's self-immolation followed alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint against a professor at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College.

Congress Blames State Govt for Failing to Protect Women

Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das announced that the bandh is supported by several parties, including Left-aligned groups. He accused the ruling BJP government of negligence and failure to ensure women's safety in educational institutions.

"She brought petrol, and everyone watched silently. No one acted. This exposes the complete failure of the state government," Das said.

The protest seeks justice for the student, who succumbed to 95% burn injuries late Monday at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, three days after she set herself ablaze on campus.

Arrests Made in Balasore Case

The student, a second-year B.Ed student, had reportedly complained about sexual harassment by a professor, but no action was taken. Following the incident, authorities have arrested the college principal and the Head of the Education Department for their alleged inaction and negligence.

Chief Minister Announces Ex Gratia of ₹20 Lakh

In response to growing public outrage, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for the student's family. He also ordered a detailed investigation into the matter to ensure all those responsible are held accountable.

A statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said, "The CM has directed concerned officers to investigate the case thoroughly and ensure strict legal action."

Odisha Governor Expresses Condolences

Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati also reacted to the tragic death. In a post on social media platform X, he said:

"Shattered to learn of the untimely loss of a young student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College. Her passing is not just a tragedy-it is a stark reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our campuses."
