Activists Unique Protest: Defacing Posters with Historical Figures

Activists from the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, have taken a unique approach to protest against the 'selfie points' featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi in various colleges and the 'Nua O' fest of the Odisha government. On Thursday, NSUI activists pasted photographs of great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and social worker Gopabandhu Das on the posters of Prime Minister Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on their college campuses across the state.

Opposition to 'Selfie Points' and 'Nua O' Fest

The NSUI has been actively opposing the 'selfie points' set up in colleges, which feature life-size cutouts of Prime Minister Modi. They argue that these 'selfie points' are a waste of public funds and serve no educational purpose. Additionally, the NSUI has also criticized the 'Nua O' fest, an initiative of the Odisha government aimed at promoting tourism and culture in the state. The NSUI alleges that the government is spending excessive amounts of money on such events while neglecting important issues like education and unemployment.

Protest at Maharishi College of Natural Law

Led by state president Yashir Nawaz, NSUI activists gathered at Maharishi College of Natural Law in Bhubaneswar and pasted photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Bose, and Gopabandhu Das on the posters and banners of PM Modi and Odisha CM. They also staged a protest before the entrance gate of the college and burnt posters of PM Modi and Patnaik. Nawaz accused the government of neglecting students after elections and highlighted the lack of benefits from schemes like Biju Yuva Vahini, which was launched before the 2019 polls.

Allegations of Collapsing Education System

Nawaz further alleged that the education system in Odisha has collapsed, with vacant teacher posts in government colleges and universities. He criticized the cancellation of students' union polls and the discontinuation of scholarship schemes by the central government. Despite these issues, Nawaz pointed out that both the central and state governments are prioritizing the installation of posters on college campuses ahead of the upcoming elections.

The NSUI's protest against the 'selfie points' and 'Nua O' fest highlights the concerns of students regarding the allocation of public funds and the neglect of important educational matters. By pasting photographs of great personalities on the posters of political leaders, the NSUI aims to draw attention to the need for prioritizing education and addressing the challenges faced by students in Odisha.
