No More FASTag After May 1? Govt Says No Satellite-Based System Replacing, ANPR Model Still on Trial
Rumours about the discontinuation of FASTag from May 1, 2025, have been declared false by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). In a statement released on Friday, the ministry clarified that there are no plans to phase out FASTag or replace it with a satellite-based tolling system anytime soon. The government has urged the public not to believe misleading reports or viral messages that claim "no more FASTag from May."

No Nationwide Rollout Yet
The ministry said that while new technologies are being explored, FASTag remains active and mandatory for toll payments across the country. The speculation arose from ongoing pilot tests involving Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, which are being tested at select toll plazas to complement FASTag-not replace it.
What's the Hybrid or ANPR Tolling System?
Rather than removing FASTag, the government is piloting a hybrid tolling model that integrates the current Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)-based FASTag with ANPR technology. This setup enables barrier-less toll collection, where high-resolution cameras scan number plates and sync them with FASTag accounts for seamless toll deduction.
This model is being evaluated for its ability to:
- Reduce congestion at toll plazas
- Speed up vehicle movement
- Offer a smoother, stop-free tolling experience
However, MoRTH has confirmed that this is only a test phase and no final decision has been made regarding nationwide adoption.
Warnings for Non-Compliance
While there's no replacement for FASTag as of now, the ministry did mention that under the hybrid system, vehicle owners must ensure compliance. Those who fail to follow toll payment protocols could face e-notices, FASTag suspension, or even penalties under the VAHAN vehicle registration database.
Don't Fall for Misinformation
The Ministry strongly advised users to avoid falling for false news regarding FASTag's discontinuation. Updates on tolling system changes will only be shared via official channels. Motorists are encouraged to stay updated through www.nhai.gov.in and morth.nic.in.
As of now: FASTag is not being discontinued
The hybrid ANPR + FASTag system is in pilot testing
No date has been fixed for nationwide rollout
Claim: The government will roll out a satellite-based tolling system across India from May 1, 2025, replacing the current FASTag system.
Fact Check: False. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has clarified that no such decision has been made, and FASTag will continue to be in use even after May 1, 2025.
