NIA Arrests Gagandeep Singh for Involvement in Human Trafficking via Dunki Route to the US
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended a significant suspect linked to the illegal migration of individuals to the United States via the notorious dunki route. This term, derived from "donkey," describes an unlawful path used by immigrants to enter countries like the US without proper documentation. Such perilous journeys are typically organised by human-trafficking networks.

Gagandeep Singh, also known as Goldie, hailing from Tilak Nagar in West Delhi, was arrested by the NIA. According to an official statement, Goldie allegedly received approximately Rs 45 lakh from a victim in Punjab's Tarn Taran district for facilitating illegal immigration. The victim was sent to the US through the dunki route in December 2024.
Illegal Immigration Route and Exploitation
The victim's journey involved travelling through Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico before reaching the US. Investigations revealed that Goldie's associates mistreated and exploited the victim during this arduous trip. They even confiscated the dollars he carried. The victim was deported back to India by US authorities on February 15 and subsequently filed a complaint against Goldie.
The case initially registered by Punjab Police was transferred to the NIA on March 13. The investigation uncovered that Goldie lacked any licence or legal permit for sending people abroad. The NIA's findings highlighted the exploitation faced by victims during such illegal migrations.
Deportation Statistics and Government Response
In response to a Lok Sabha query, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh stated on March 28 that since January 2025, 636 Indian nationals have been deported from the US. This statistic underscores the ongoing challenges of illegal immigration and deportation faced by Indian citizens.
The NIA's arrest of Goldie marks a significant step in addressing human trafficking and illegal immigration issues. By targeting key figures in these networks, authorities aim to dismantle operations that exploit vulnerable individuals seeking better opportunities abroad.
