NHAI Brings Real-Time Highway Warnings to Jio Users Across India
Travellers using Reliance Jio's mobile network on India's National Highways will soon begin receiving real-time warnings about dangerous road conditions, following a new agreement between Reliance Jio and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The initiative introduces a telecom-driven alert system designed to give motorists an early heads-up about hazards that often lead to sudden accidents.

Under the new system, Jio users will be notified whenever they approach a risky stretch of road. Alerts may include warnings about accident-prone zones, stretches affected by dense fog, cattle movement, abrupt diversions or any unexpected obstacle ahead. Messages will be issued through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority voice calls, ensuring that drivers receive updates even in areas where data connectivity drops.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the setup does not require new roadside hardware. Instead, the system relies on Jio's existing network of telecom towers, which already cover large sections of the country's highway corridors. These alerts will eventually be linked to NHAI's digital platforms, including the Rajmargyatra mobile app and the 1033 emergency helpline.
The alerts will work automatically. Any Jio subscriber travelling through a flagged zone will receive warnings without needing to activate a feature or sign up separately. With Jio currently serving more than 500 million users, officials believe the system could improve public awareness of highway risks, particularly during long-distance journeys when visibility and reaction time matter most.
A pilot rollout will begin through selected NHAI regional offices. The test phase will focus on accuracy, response timing and identification of high-risk points along different highway sections. NHAI has also confirmed that talks are underway with other telecom operators. If these discussions move forward, similar alert services may eventually extend to non-Jio users, widening safety coverage across India's road network.
Once fully implemented, the system is expected to help motorists take preventive action-whether by slowing down, changing lanes or choosing an alternate route-when an unexpected hazard is detected ahead. For highway users, especially those travelling at night or through unfamiliar stretches, timely alerts could make journeys smoother and significantly safer in the months ahead.
