New Rules For Vehicle Number Plates: Comply By April 30 Or Face Fines—Read Inside
The State Transport Commissioner's Office (RTO) has ordered a crackdown on vehicles registered in the state after April 2019 that do not have High-Security Number Plates (HSRP), according to a Lokmat report. Additionally, vehicles registered before April 2019 will face penalties if they display unofficial or fancy number plates, such as 'Kaka, Mama, or Dada.' A special inspection campaign is set to take place from February 18 to March 15, involving all RTOs across the state.
This action is a result of a Supreme Court ruling that mandates all vehicles registered after April 2019 must possess HSRP. The RTO has observed that many drivers have been ignoring this requirement, which is considered a violation of the court order. Officials from the Transport Commission have stated that strict measures will be enforced to ensure compliance with this legal obligation. Instructions have been issued to all RTOs to conduct thorough inspections of vehicles and take necessary actions against those found in violation.

For vehicles registered before April 2019, the deadline to install HSRP has been extended to April 30, 2025. After this date, any vehicle failing to comply will incur a fine of Rs 1,000, as stipulated under Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
In the state, it is estimated that around two crore vehicles were registered before April 2019, and all these vehicles are now required to display HSRP. While the deadline is approaching, the RTO will particularly focus on enforcing penalties against vehicles displaying non-compliant fancy number plates. Drivers are urged to ensure their vehicles meet the new regulations to avoid fines and potential legal issues.
