NDMC Increases Parking Charges in Lutyens Delhi to Address Rising Air Pollution Levels
To tackle the escalating air pollution in New Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has decided to double parking fees in the Lutyens Delhi area. This measure aims to encourage public transport use and reduce vehicle emissions. The revised charges apply to off-road and indoor parking managed by NDMC until Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is lifted.

However, these increased fees will not affect on-street parking locations or those with monthly passes. A senior NDMC official stated, "In keeping Delhi's rising pollution in mind, the NDMC has decided to double its parking charges to encourage people to travel by public transportation." The directive for this change is effective immediately.
Parking Charges and Exemptions
Currently, surface parking at NDMC lots costs Rs 20 per hour for four-wheelers, with a daily cap of Rs 100. Two-wheelers are charged Rs 10 per hour. Multilevel parking sites have different rates: Rs 10 for four hours for cars and Rs 5 for two-wheelers for up to four hours. These rates remain unchanged for on-street parking and monthly pass holders.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which oversees about 96% of the city's area, has not yet increased its parking fees. A proposal for a hike is awaiting approval from the House. "Parking in MCD is based on auction, and accordingly the rate is increased," a senior MCD official explained.
Impact of Air Quality Deterioration
The decision follows a significant decline in Delhi's air quality, which has recently fallen into the 'very poor' category. A dense smog layer has been covering the city each morning, prompting authorities to enforce Stage II of GRAP. This stage includes bans on coal and firewood use in eateries and restrictions on diesel generator sets, except for essential services.
Last year, similar measures were taken when GRAP II was activated on October 21, 2023, leading to a doubling of parking charges. The current situation mirrors last year's conditions as authorities strive to manage pollution levels effectively.
These efforts highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Delhi in addressing air quality issues. By increasing parking fees, officials hope to reduce vehicular traffic and promote cleaner alternatives like public transportation.
