Naveen Patnaik Responds To Criticism Of Close Aide VK Pandian

Outgoing Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has staunchly defended his close aide VK Pandian amid escalating criticism from opponents. In a recent address, Patnaik dismissed speculations regarding Pandian's political ambitions and potential succession, clarifying that the people of Odisha will determine his successor, not Pandian.

Patnaik highlighted Pandian's extensive contributions in various sectors such as health, education, sports, and temple restoration. He praised Pandian's exemplary work during crises like cyclones and the Covid-19 pandemic, noting his integrity and dedication to public service, reported NDTV. Despite retiring from bureaucracy and joining the BJD, Pandian has not sought any political posts, focusing instead on his service to the party and the state, the outgoing CM said.

"I would like to say that Pandian has also worked and helped in health, education, sports, and our programme of temple restoration. Pandian joined the party but has not had any posts. I have always clearly said that when they asked me about my successor, I said clearly that it was not Pandian. I repeat it. The people of Odisha will decide my successor," Patnaik declared.

The recent state elections marked a significant shift in Odisha's political landscape, with the BJP winning 78 seats in the 147-member assembly, ending BJD's 24-year rule. The Naveen Patnaik-led party secured 51 seats, Congress took 14, and three seats went to Independents.

Speaking about the Odisha Lok Sabha elections, the BJD was routed, with BJP winning 20 out of 21 seats.

Reflecting on his tenure, Patnaik expressed pride in BJD's accomplishments and emphasised the importance of accepting the people's verdict gracefully. He reiterated his commitment to serving the people of Odisha, regardless of his position.

The defense of Pandian comes amid rumors of his alleged influence over Patnaik and the state's administrative machinery. Pandian, an IAS officer from the 2000 batch and Patnaik's former private secretary, transitioned from bureaucracy to politics in 2023.

Despite the controversies, Patnaik reaffirmed that Pandian's role in the state's development should not be misinterpreted as a bid for succession, reiterating that the decision lies with the people of Odisha.

"I have always said that the 4.5 crore people of Odisha are my family. I will continue to serve them in whichever way I can," he added.
