Rafi Ahmad Kidwai's Private Papers Join National Archives of India Collection
The National Archives of India (NAI) has recently enriched its collection with the private papers of Rafi Ahmad Kidwai, a prominent figure in India's struggle for independence and a former Union minister. This significant acquisition includes original correspondences between Kidwai and other key leaders of his time, such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The handover of these documents was facilitated by Faiz Ahmad Kidwai, currently serving as the additional secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and was witnessed by members of the Kidwai family.

The NAI, recognized as the guardian of the Government of India's non-current records, plays a pivotal role in preserving the nation's historical documents. This institution not only safeguards public records but also houses a growing collection of private papers belonging to distinguished Indians who have significantly contributed to the country's legacy. The inclusion of Rafi Ahmad Kidwai's papers is expected to offer researchers and historians a deeper insight into the political dynamics and personal relationships of India's pre- and post-independence era.
Rafi Ahmad Kidwai is celebrated for his dynamic personality and his relentless fight against colonial rule, communalism, and superstition. Born on February 18, 1894, in Uttar Pradesh, Kidwai's political engagement began with his participation in the Khilafat Movement and the Non-Cooperation Movement, which led to his imprisonment. His career trajectory saw him serving as a private secretary to Motilal Nehru, holding significant roles within the Congress Legislative Assembly, and eventually becoming a minister in Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant’s cabinet.
Following India’s independence, Kidwai was appointed as the nation’s first minister for communications in Nehru's cabinet, where he introduced innovative initiatives such as the "own your telephone service" and night air mail service. In 1952, he took on the role of minister for food and agriculture, where he was instrumental in addressing food rationing issues through his administrative prowess. His efforts in these capacities earned him widespread acclaim, leading to the establishment of the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1956.
Kidwai's tenure is marked by his reputation for innovation in communications and his successful leadership in overcoming challenges related to food scarcity. His legacy as a freedom fighter and an adept administrator continues to serve as an inspiration for many. The acquisition of his papers by the NAI not only commemorates his contributions but also ensures that future generations will have access to valuable resources that shed light on India’s rich historical tapestry.
Through this acquisition, the NAI reaffirms its commitment to preserving India's historical heritage and facilitating research that contributes to a deeper understanding of the nation's past. Rafi Ahmad Kidwai's papers are poised to become an invaluable asset for scholars and individuals keen on exploring the intricacies of India’s journey towards independence and development.
