MVA Alliance Leaders Finalise Seat-Sharing Agreement Ahead of Maharashtra Elections Announcement
Late on Tuesday, top leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance gathered to finalise seat-sharing for the Maharashtra assembly elections on November 20. An announcement was expected on Wednesday, with Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut indicating a press conference would be held. However, there was no confirmation from MVA leaders about media reports suggesting Congress would contest 105 seats, Shiv Sena UBT 95, and NCP SP 84 out of the 288 assembly seats.

Senior state Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat played a crucial role in resolving the impasse between Shiv Sena UBT and Congress. Thorat first met with NCP SP president Sharad Pawar and then with Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray. Following these discussions, Thorat and other MVA leaders convened for over five hours at a luxury hotel to continue negotiations.
Seat-Sharing Discussions
Earlier, Raut had mentioned that consensus had been reached on 210 out of the 288 assembly seats. Meanwhile, state Congress chief Nana Patole stated that discussions had concluded on 96 seats. Patole remarked that the ruling Mahayuti faced more significant challenges than the MVA when asked about the seat-sharing deadlock within the opposition alliance.
As negotiations continued among MVA partners, smaller parties within the alliance grew increasingly impatient. These parties included the Samajwadi Party (SP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Left parties, and the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP). Their restlessness highlighted the urgency to finalise arrangements ahead of the elections.
Efforts to Resolve Impasse
Thorat revealed that Ramesh Chennithala, AICC's Maharashtra in-charge, had instructed him to meet with Pawar and Thackeray. This directive aimed to address the roadblock in talks between Shiv Sena UBT and Congress. The prolonged meeting at the hotel underscored the determination of MVA leaders to reach an agreement.
The seat-sharing arrangement is crucial for the MVA alliance as it prepares to challenge the ruling coalition in Maharashtra. The allocation of remaining seats to smaller parties within the alliance remains a critical aspect of these discussions. The outcome will significantly impact the opposition's strategy in the upcoming elections.
The ongoing negotiations reflect the complexities involved in balancing interests within a diverse political alliance like MVA. As leaders work towards a resolution, their ability to maintain unity will be tested in the face of electoral challenges posed by their opponents.
