Mumbai Police Establishes Sixth Joint Commissioner Role to Enhance Intelligence Gathering Efforts
The Maharashtra government has decided to introduce a sixth joint commissioner post for Mumbai police, focusing on intelligence gathering. This move follows the recent military conflict between India and Pakistan. Previously, Mumbai police had five joint commissioners handling law and order, crime, administration, traffic, and economic offences.

In Mumbai, the Special Branch is responsible for intelligence gathering. This branch was previously led by an additional commissioner of deputy inspector general rank who reported to the joint commissioner of law and order. Now, an inspector-general rank officer will head the Special Branch as a joint commissioner.
Intelligence Gathering Focus
The Special Branch plays a crucial role in monitoring developments across the city. It collects intelligence inputs and tracks activities of sleeper cells and sympathisers. The new joint commissioner will report directly to the police commissioner while coordinating with the joint commissioner of law and order.
This restructuring aims to enhance intelligence gathering and improve information sharing with senior officials. The goal is to enable swift action when necessary. Currently, the additional commissioner post for the Special Branch is vacant and managed by the additional commissioner of police crime.
The official highlighted that this change will streamline intelligence operations in Mumbai. "It will help in gathering intelligence and sharing information with superiors in a timely manner so that swift action can be taken," he stated.
This decision reflects a strategic shift in how intelligence is managed within Mumbai's police force. By elevating the role of the Special Branch, authorities aim to strengthen security measures in the city.
