Navi Mumbai Maintains Third Position

In contrast to Mumbai's decline, the neighboring satellite city of Navi Mumbai managed to retain its third position from the previous year's survey. Navi Mumbai's consistent performance in the Swachh Survekshan highlights its effective sanitation practices.

Indore and Surat Share Top Rank

Indore and Surat jointly secured the first rank in the annual sanitation survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Indore's remarkable achievement marks its seventh consecutive year as the cleanest city in India, while Surat's joint win showcases its significant progress in sanitation.

BMC Expresses Confidence in Improvement

Despite Mumbai's drop in ranking, the BMC remains optimistic about an improvement in the next survey. Dr. Sudhakar Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner, emphasized the extensive efforts undertaken to enhance cleanliness and expressed confidence in a better performance next year.

Other Maharashtra Cities' Performance

Pune secured the 10th position at the all-India level, while Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli were ranked 14th and 22nd respectively. These rankings indicate the varying levels of cleanliness across different cities in Maharashtra.

Mumbai's Detailed Report Card

Mumbai's detailed report card revealed that it received 4446.19 marks out of 7,500 and ranked 189th nationally among 446 cities across different population categories. This assessment provides insights into specific areas where improvements are needed.

Deep Cleaning Drive Initiated

To address cleanliness concerns, the BMC has initiated a deep cleaning drive under the guidance of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This initiative involves the collection of debris and garbage every weekend in specific areas, with the Chief Minister personally monitoring its progress.

Cleanest Cities in India

Indore's consistent performance earned it the title of the cleanest city in India for the seventh consecutive time. Surat's joint win further highlights the success of Central government's annual cleanliness survey in recognizing and promoting sanitation efforts.

Bottom-Ranked Cities

At the other end of the spectrum, three cities from West Bengal - Madhyamgram, Kalyani, and Haora - occupied the bottom rankings in the survey, indicating the need for significant improvements in cleanliness.

Maharashtra Named Cleanest State

In the best-performing states category, Maharashtra was recognized as the cleanest state in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. This achievement reflects Maharashtra's commitment to sanitation and hygiene.

Awards and Participation

President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards to the winning cities and states at a function attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The Swachh Survekshan 2023 witnessed the participation of 4,477 urban local bodies, with over 12 core citizen responses and extensive coverage of municipal wards, cantonment boards, Ganga towns, and commercial areas.
