Gangster-Turned-Politician Mukhtar Ansari Dies in UP, Security Ramped Up
In a significant development from Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Ansari, a notable gangster-turned-politician, succumbed to cardiac arrest at the Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda. The incident occurred on Thursday, as confirmed by the college's principal, Suneel Kaushal. Ansari, who had a long history of criminal activities and political influence, was 63 at the time of his demise.

Following Ansari's death, the Uttar Pradesh government took immediate steps to maintain law and order across the state. Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were enforced, restricting large gatherings. This measure was particularly emphasized in districts such as Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi, areas known for their connection to Ansari.
Ansari's journey from politics to prison was marked by his tenure as a five-time MLA from the Mau Sadar seat. His criminal record included over 60 cases, with convictions in eight since September 2022. His incarceration in Banda jail was part of a broader crackdown on gang-related activities in Uttar Pradesh.
The circumstances surrounding Ansari's death have sparked controversy. His brother, Afzal Ansari, alleged that Mukhtar was a victim of slow poisoning while in jail, a claim that has been refuted by authorities. This accusation came after Mukhtar was hospitalized due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting, which his family attributes to poisoning.
Uttar Pradesh's Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, highlighted the state's efforts to ensure peace and security following the incident. The deployment of Central Reserve Police Force teams alongside local police in sensitive districts underscores the government's commitment to preventing any unrest.
The medical bulletin released by Rani Durgavati Medical College detailed that Ansari was admitted in an unconscious state after experiencing vomiting. Despite the efforts of a nine-doctor team, he could not be revived.
The Samajwadi Party expressed condolences over Ansari's death through a social media post, reflecting on his political legacy and extending sympathies to his family.
Ansari's death has not only left a void in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh but also raised questions about safety and security within the state's prison system. As investigations continue into the allegations of poisoning, this incident remains a focal point of discussion among political circles and citizens alike.
