Middle-Class Life In 1970 Vs 2025: Viral Post Sparks Debate on India's Economic Progress
A LinkedIn post comparing the lifestyle of middle-class Indians across two generations has gone viral, reigniting discussions about whether economic growth has translated into better quality of life. The post by Delhi-based entrepreneur Himanshu Kalra has garnered thousands of reactions and comments since being published earlier this week.
Kalra, founder of tech startup Binoloop, presented a stark contrast between the life trajectories of middle-class men in 1970 versus 2025. His post began with a nostalgic look at the 1970s:

"You go to college, get a degree, learn one skill, get a job, good salary, nice house, get married, have three kids, raise a family of five. You're set for life."
The contemporary scenario painted a markedly different picture: "Compete with millions to go to college... start with debt... continuously upskill... both partners work to afford kids... Mental health? Figure it out yourself. But sure, the economy's 'booming.'"
Key Differences Highlighted:
Education: From guaranteed college admission to cut-throat competition
Employment: Single-skill career stability vs constant upskilling demands
Family Life: From single-income households supporting 3 children to dual-income families struggling with 1 child
Financial Security: From being "set for life" to perpetual financial anxiety
How People Reacted?
One user said, "Dude, if you learn how to invest your money well right from your first salary, you will have an easy life during any era... Mental health is easy, no need to take any stress. Just relax and chill. Life is not a competition. It is for us to enjoy our limited time on the planet."
The second user commeted, "The never-ending cycle of upskilling, inflation, and mental health struggles? That's the reality for many today."
Taking potshots at the current generation, another netizen claims, "Multiple kids in the 70s, causing the heavy competition and inflation now 😂 kudos to the boomer generation."
"I see both sides of this every day. Yes, there's more opportunity today but there's also more overwhelm. More choice, but less clarity. More access, but also more anxiety. What strikes me most is how resilience has replaced stability as the modern currency. In the 1970s, success was linear. In 2025, it's iterative. We're not building one life-we're rebuilding it, skill by skill, every 2-3 years," the fourth user stated.
The Bigger Question
While India's economy grows, Kalra's post forces a reflection: Does today's middle-class life offer more opportunities or just more pressure? With financial burdens, rapid skill obsolescence, and mental health challenges, the debate continues-is this progress, or just a different kind of struggle?
