Meet 'Missile Rani': Sheena Rani, The DRDO Genius Leading Agni-5 Missile Test Under 'Mission Divyastra'
India's first flight-test of the Agni-5 missile, featuring multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) technology, was conducted on Monday from the Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
Spearheaded by missile expert R Sheena Rani, the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) team achieved this milestone.

Sheena Rani, The DRDO Genius
The 57-year-old, serving as programme director at Hyderabad-based Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) of DRDO, led the development of the missile with multiple nuclear warheads. This accomplishment not only placed India in an elite club of nations but also garnered international attention, particularly from China, due to the missile's 5,000-km-range, covering almost all neighboring countries of India.
Scientific Journey and Achievements
Rani, who previously worked at Isro's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre for eight years, transitioned to DRDO in 1999 after the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. She has been an integral part of India's Agni missile programme since then, contributing significantly to its development. Among her notable achievements is the successful integration of MIRV technology into the Agni series. As the associate director of DRDO's ASL, she has played a pivotal role in advancing India's missile capabilities.
Personal Background and Inspirations
Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Rani faced personal challenges early in life, losing her father during her schooling years. However, she credits her mother as the main source of support and inspiration. Rani pursued her engineering degree from the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET) before embarking on her illustrious career in missile technology. Drawing inspiration from India's 'Missile Man' and former DRDO chief, A P J Abdul Kalam, as well as missile technologist Dr Avinash Chander, Rani has carved a path of excellence in her field.
Contributions and Recognition
Throughout her tenure at DRDO, Rani has received numerous accolades, including the "scientist of the year award" in 2016. Her dedication and expertise have been instrumental in bolstering India's defense capabilities, ensuring the nation's security and sovereignty.
