Mamata Banerjee Appeals to Bangladesh for Release of 84 Jailed Fishermen from Bengal
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the Bangladesh government to free 84 fishermen from her state. These fishermen were jailed for crossing the international border illegally. Speaking at the state secretariat, Banerjee highlighted India's strong ties with Bangladesh. She explained that two fishing trawlers recently entered Bangladeshi waters, leading to the arrest of 36 fishermen.

Banerjee mentioned that despite this incident, three more trawlers with 48 fishermen crossed into Bangladesh and were also detained. She speculated that these trawlers might have lost their way or had other reasons for crossing the border. "We are doing whatever can be done legally," she stated, emphasising efforts to resolve the issue.
Strong Bilateral Relations
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of maintaining a good relationship with neighbouring countries. "Bangladesh is our friend. We speak the same language, eat the same food and wear the same dress," she said. Banerjee believes that such relationships help in resolving issues swiftly and effectively.
She also noted that political changes are inevitable but expressed hope for improved relations. "Faces change in politics but I hope the situation will improve again," Banerjee remarked, underlining the need for a harmonious relationship between countries sharing borders.
Warnings to Fishermen
The fishermen had been warned by unions not to venture into neighbouring waters due to current political tensions. Banerjee reiterated this caution, urging them to foster a strong friendship between nations. "It's a matter of two countries," she added, highlighting the delicate nature of international relations.
Banerjee recounted an incident where a Bangladeshi trawler capsized in Indian waters three days ago. The Coast Guard rescued four individuals, although one person remained missing. The rescued were released as they possessed valid documents, similar to Indian fishermen who carry Aadhaar cards.
The Chief Minister appealed to Bangladesh to consider releasing the detained Indian fishermen. She emphasised shared cultural ties and mutual understanding between the two nations as a basis for resolving such issues amicably.
