Mamata Banerjee's Muslim Vote Bank Will Be Finished: Suspended TMC Leader Humayun Kabir

Suspended Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir has turned open rebel after announcing a Babri Masjid replica in Murshidabad, declaring that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must not secure a fourth term in 2026. Warning of major damage to Banerjee's core support, Kabir said, "Trinamool's Muslim vote bank will be finished," and added, "picture abhi baki hai (the climax is yet to arrive)."

Kabir plans to float a new political outfit on December 22, aiming to cut into minority votes and influence next year's Bengal assembly election. He told mdia that he wants to contest a large chunk of seats and hopes to align with Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's party AIMIM.

Detailing his blueprint, Kabir vowed to contest nearly half the Assembly. "I will form a new party that will work for Muslims. I will field candidates in 135 seats. I will become a game-changer in the Bengal election. I am in touch with AIMIM and will fight the election with them. I had a word with Owasi," he said, though AIMIM and Asaduddin Owaisi have stayed silent so far.

Kabir stressed that his fight targets both Trinamool and the BJP, accusing each side of using religion as a political tool. He said, "I will not let the BJP come to power in Bengal. Trinamool will not be able to form its next government," and claimed support from business interests and donors.

Explaining how the contested mosque plan will be funded, Kabir claimed, "many industries across India are going to help me. Muslims in India have a lot of funds; they are going to help build Babri." The comments come as parties watch how minority voters react before the 2026 state polls.

Muslims are a crucial voting bloc for Trinamool, which has relied on this base to resist the BJP's rise. In the 2021 Assembly polls, Trinamool won a two-thirds majority in the 294-member House, even as Mamata Banerjee herself lost in Nandigram, a symbolic seat in the battle with the BJP.

The Trinamool Congress suspended Kabir, stating that the party believes in a "secular theory," and distanced itself from the mosque proposal. The BJP, however, alleged the entire episode is part of a scripted strategy, with state chief Samik Bhattacharya calling it a "calculated Trinamool agenda." He also claimed Banerjee's party "stands with Babur, but we don't."

Former Bengal BJP chief and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar took an even harder line, insisting the project would be rejected by many residents. "'Babri mosque' will never be accepted in Bengal," Majumdar said. "No one is opposing the construction of a mosque, but building one in the name of Babur seems like an attempt to insult Hindus and provoke them. The Hindu community will respond appropriately," he added.

Despite the suspension and political attacks, Kabir's foundation-laying event at Beldanga drew a huge crowd. He claimed that eight lakh people attended on Saturday without police backing, bringing donations in bricks and cash. Many supporters linked the move to the 1992 demolition of the Ayodhya mosque or saw it as a protest against alleged Trinamool excesses.
