Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar Hits Back at Uddhav Thackerays Criticism
Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar defended his decisions on disqualification petitions related to Shiv Sena MLAs, challenging Uddhav Thackeray to prove any illegality. Narwekars appointment as head of a committee to review the anti-defection law drew criticism from Thackeray and other leaders.
Mumbai, Jan 29: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Monday responded to the criticism leveled against him by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray regarding his appointment as the head of a committee to review the anti-defection law. Thackeray had questioned the move and alleged that it was an attempt to undermine democracy in the country.

Narwekar Challenges Thackeray to Prove Illegality
In a strong rebuttal, Narwekar challenged Thackeray to provide evidence of any illegality in his decisions related to the disqualification petitions of Shiv Sena MLAs. He asserted that neither Thackeray nor Jitendra Awhad of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had the courage to substantiate their accusations.
Narwekar Accuses Thackeray of Lacking State Pride
Narwekar expressed disappointment over Thackeray's criticism, stating that instead of taking pride in the fact that someone from Maharashtra was entrusted with a national-level responsibility, Thackeray chose to criticize the appointment. He suggested that such behavior could only be attributed to those who lacked affection or pride for the state.
Narwekar's Appointment Draws Criticism
Thackeray had earlier criticized Narwekar's appointment, questioning its motives and suggesting that it was a step towards ending democracy in the country. His son, Aaditya Thackeray, had also taken a dig at Narwekar, sarcastically remarking that perhaps his experience of joining three parties in five years made him suitable for leading the committee.
Narwekar's response highlights the ongoing political tensions in Maharashtra and the differing perspectives on the role of the anti-defection law. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the committee's review of the law will impact the political landscape in the state and beyond.
