Maharashtra Cabinet Proposes Bharat Ratna For Ratan Tata
The Maharashtra cabinet has passed a resolution urging the central government to award the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, to the late Ratan Tata. This decision follows a proposal by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction after Tata's passing on Wednesday night. Shiv Sena leader Rahool Kanal wrote to Shinde, advocating for Tata's recognition with this prestigious award.

In his letter, Kanal highlighted Tata's embodiment of kindness, integrity, and selfless service. He noted Tata's philanthropic efforts, such as supporting stray animals and providing shelter through his hotels. Kanal also mentioned Tata's commitment to healthcare for the underprivileged by establishing cancer hospitals. "This acknowledgement would serve as a fitting tribute to a man who epitomized the values of kindness, integrity, and selfless service to humanity," Kanal stated.

Ratan Tata passed away at 86 after a brief illness. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to low blood pressure and was in critical condition before his death. The Maharashtra cabinet, led by CM Shinde and deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, paid tribute to Tata during a meeting on Thursday.
Ratan Tata: A Legacy of Leadership
Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, Ratan Tata was a prominent industrialist and philanthropist. He chaired the Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust, two major philanthropic organisations in India. From 1991 until his retirement in 2012, he served as Chairman of Tata Sons and later became Chairman Emeritus.
The Bharat Ratna award was established on January 2, 1954. It recognises exceptional service or performance of the highest order across various fields. Initially limited to arts, literature, science, and public service achievements, its scope expanded in December 2011 to include any field of human endeavour.
Bharat Ratna: Prestigious Recognition
Recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President and are typically announced on Republic Day (January 26). The first recipients were C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and CV Raman in 1954. To date, 53 individuals have received this honour, including 18 posthumously.
In 2024, notable figures such as Karpoori Thakur, Lal Krishna Advani, Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, and MS Swaminathan were awarded the Bharat Ratna. The recognition of Ratan Tata would celebrate his significant contributions to society through business leadership and philanthropy.
The Maharashtra government's resolution reflects widespread admiration for Ratan Tata's legacy. His contributions have left an indelible mark on Indian society through both his business acumen and humanitarian efforts.
