Mahakumbh Stampede: Trains to Prayagraj Diverted, Special Services Suspended

With the commencement of the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, a significant surge in attendees was observed on Mauni Amavasya, leading to a tragic stampede-like situation. To manage the overwhelming influx of devotees, the authorities have made several logistical changes, including the alteration of train routes and the suspension of specific Mahakumbh Mela special trains. These adjustments aim to enhance the safety and convenience of the millions making their pilgrimage to the sacred Sangam.

In light of the unfortunate stampede incident at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh, the local administration has heightened security measures. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) alongside police personnel has been deployed in greater numbers at the Prayagraj Junction to ensure the well-being of the devotees. These steps have been taken to facilitate secure passage for the throngs of pilgrims participating in the Mauni Amavasya bath, emphasizing the administration's commitment to safety amidst extraordinary circumstances.

Uttar Pradesh Information Department said,''Till now over 3.61 crore people have taken a holy dip in Triveni waters today, with more than 19.94 crore people overall till January 28.''

Reports initially suggested that special trains for the Mahakumbh Mela traveling from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction to Prayagraj had been cancelled.

Meanwhile, Northern Railway has clarified that no special trains to the Maha Kumbh have been canceled. All regular trains are operating as scheduled, with some additional trains running based on passenger demand.

The scale of the event is monumental, with over 13 crore devotees having participated in the Sangam's holy dip during the Mahakumbh period. Remarkably, about 10 crore pilgrims converged on the site specifically for the Mauni Amavasya ritual. The influx of visitors has been consistently high since January 25, with an average of one crore pilgrims arriving daily. To streamline the movement of such vast numbers, authorities have directed that entry to the Prayagraj Junction be exclusively through the city side gate and platform number 1, while exits are to be made through Civil Lines and platform number 6 only.

In the wake of the stampede, which resulted in numerous injuries, Manish Kumar, the Commercial Manager of the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Railway Division, announced the suspension of special train operations from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction to Prayagraj. This decision underscores the challenges faced in managing the extraordinary crowd sizes drawn by the Mahakumbh Mela. While the specific Mahakumbh Mela trains have been halted, regular train services continue to operate, ensuring that pilgrims can still reach Prayagraj, albeit with some adjustments to their travel plans.

The halted operation of the Mahakumbh Mela special trains is a temporary measure, awaiting further orders. This suspension, prompted by the need to address safety concerns amidst the heavy crowd presence in Prayagraj, reflects the authorities' responsiveness to the situation.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath contacted Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting an increase in the number of trains departing from Prayagraj. The Chief Minister emphasized the need to facilitate the smooth and swift departure of the devotees attending the Mahakumbh.

In reply, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured that trains are currently running every four minutes, with over 360 trains operating from Prayagraj today.

Despite these changes, the spirit of the Mahakumbh Mela, a gathering of unparalleled scale and devotion, remains undiminished. Pilgrims and officials alike are adapting to ensure that the sacred traditions continue in a manner that prioritizes the well-being of all involved.
