Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Engages with UK House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle on Democratic Values
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla praised the Election Commission for its strong record in managing elections that are free, fair, and impartial. He made these comments during a meeting with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the UK House of Commons. Birla is currently visiting the UK, including Scotland, to engage with their parliaments and presiding officers.

During his visit, Birla highlighted India's vibrant democracy, which includes nearly one billion voters. He emphasised the government's efforts to increase women's participation in elections, showcasing the inclusiveness of India's electoral process. Despite its diversity, India has successfully met the aspirations of various societal segments through parliamentary discussions.
India-UK Relations and Cooperation
Birla also met with Pat McFadden, the UK's Minister for Intergovernmental Relations. They discussed topics such as free trade, economic ties, and advancements in technology like Artificial Intelligence. Birla expressed gratitude for McFadden's recognition of India's growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.
"Our historic relations have evolved into a robust, multifaceted and mutually beneficial partnership covering multiple sectors including defence, health, education and climate change," Birla stated. This partnership has been particularly evident during the Covid pandemic, where cooperation extended to vaccine development.
Strengthening Parliamentary Ties
The visit also included a trip to Guernsey to chair a meeting of presiding officers from Commonwealth nations. This engagement aims to strengthen parliamentary ties and foster dialogue among member countries. The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration across various sectors.
